This was my lineup for the @sydneyknifeshow this year.

To say that it was hard to get these ready is saying nothing at all - I worked until 1am for many consecutive days and stole a lot of time from my family. I also went through 80 bandaids. lol

Preparing for the knife show causes me a lot of angst, pain, and stress, but it also offers opportunities for learning and growth.
Two years ago, I faced nine Honyaki failures while preparing for a show, which forced me to reevaluate every step of my process. At the same time, I had a custom order that required a specific type of hamon. Despite teaching classes on hamons, I realized I wasn’t confident in my ability to produce a specific type on demand.

This realization hit hard, especially after nine years of making Honyakis.

I went back to the books and had discussions with @gcknives_inc, @keithf_knives, @oatleyknives @comet_knives, and @gumbinercustomknives. I took extensive notes and spent the past two years testing various factors. While I became quite proficient, I’m still far from perfect. Making things more challenging was my stubbornness regarding the steel I wanted to use. Although I achieved great results with Spicy White/26C3, I wasn’t entirely satisfied since I couldn’t get any ashi (this steel has too much chromium). My heart is set on W2, which is much harder to control.

As I prepared for this year’s show, I set an ambitious goal: to make five Honyakis in W2 (along with other knives), all with the same type of hamon, just to see if I had gained some control. It was a lot of work, but here’s the result. Needless to say, I’m very happy 🤪

High performance version. Forged-in distal taper and bevels (flat). Hollow ground-in post heat treat. Wicked little (250mm) Gyuto and hamon is popping already at 120 grit.

Laying in bevels on a 300mm Sujihiki using a 36” water cooled radius platen 🗡️

I use 36”, 48” and 72” platens for various applications. These basically replicate geometry of a Japanese water stone wheel - kaiten toishi.

I also included a photo of myself to remind you what I look like as I don’t post selfies often. Probably a good thing 👹
